Editor’s LEttEr Glenda Bailey on Bazaar’s frst beauty issue

Above: Glenda Bailey with Alexandra Parnass

don penny/studio d

Here at Bazaar we’re head over heels for all things beauty. Our May issue is devoted to the subject, and Bazaar beauty director Alexandra Parnass pulled out all the stops to deliver the greatest and the glossiest in the business. First, we photographed Kate Moss, one of the most stunning women alive—and, at 40, more fabulous than ever. But there’s nothing more beautiful than creativity, which was celebrated in all its forms at the Fall 2014 collections. Take Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel show, where he dreamed up a giant Chanel supermarket inside the Grand Palais. Not that we needed encouragement to shop—especially when the clothes came out. Watching the models push their carts through aisles of Coco Choco cereal and Chanel-branded madeleines was, for many, too much to resist. Some guests made of with all manner of sundries, including a doormat and … a chain saw. While there were no power tools at Louis Vuitton, Nicolas Ghesquière didn’t need them. His eagerly anticipated show, packed with the most coveted pieces for fall, lived up to expectations. Lanvin is always a highlight: Alber Elbaz is a man with a million ideas, and he knows how to alchemize every one of them into desirable clothes. In this show, Triple X, long, sweeping shapes shared the runway with short modern skirt suits and cozy faux fur coats. Michael Kors went boho (well, NYC style) with his fowing dresses, bold boots, and tailored coats, and the global travelers in Ralph Lauren’s newly launched Polo collection, with its Southwest-inspired looks, had us wanting to explore new territory. I also loved Valentino’s assured, feminine collection, which carried forward the butterfy motif from the designers’ latest couture show. After all, there’s beauty to be found in spreading your wings.

Backstage at Marc Jacobs, Fall 2014

What are your fve must-have products for women? They’re all Redken. Thickening Lotion, and Argan oil, a multipurpose oil that strengthens the hair as it gives it a shine. Powder Refresh, a dry shampoo, is very easy to use, makes your blow-dry last longer—it’s a must. And I know women don’t like hair spray, but there’s one called Fashion Work 12 that’s a pliable spray. It’s soft but has hold, which I love. Don’t be afraid of hair spray. And Quick Tease is a great texturizer that I use. It gives volume straight to the root.

Do you prefer long or short hair on women? I like that collarbonelength hair, really. It’s not long, it’s not short; you can do anything with it. But then these girls like Miley Cyrus and Rihanna change their hair every fve seconds, and I like it all. I’m thinking of going really short. Should I try it? I think women should have guts and try something new. If you never try something, you never know. I mean, don’t go crazy. You could try a wig on frst.

What’s the best way to try out a new product? Try new products the night before, when your hair is dirty and you’re going to wash it later. Dolce & Gabbana, Spring 2014

What is your least favorite hairstyle? I hate the kind of spiral curl on women that looks like their curls haven’t been brushed out and they kind of bounce around. The ringlets. I really hate that. It’s almost like wedding hair.

From working the ’dos of iconic supermodels like Christy, Naomi, and Linda in George Michael’s “Freedom! ’90” video to shaping trends on runways in New York, London, Paris, and Milan for such clients as Marc Jacobs, Alexander McQueen, and Calvin Klein, Guido Palau has had a hand in creating some of fashion’s most memorable images. Here, the celebrated hairstylist and Redken creative consultant gets quizzed by Bazaar readers.

Louis Vuitton, Spring 2013

If you weren’t a revered hair genius, what would you be? A potter.

Prada, Fall 2012

What do you think of Harry Styles’s hair? It started out good, but now it’s grown into something else. I think that with people who are known for their hair—especially when they become famous—it morphs into something bigger than it should be. I mean, who am I to argue with a million young girls about Harry Styles’s hair? I’m sure they’re completely right. You know, with celebrities, their quifs get bigger when they become more famous. I guess it’s hard to keep proportional when you’re that famous. As told to Alessandra Codinha

From left: Guido’s personal engraved Mason Pearson B2 Small Extra boar-bristle brush, $290; Redken All Soft Argan-6 Oil, $30; and Redken Thickening Lotion 06 All-Over Body Builder, $17

Versace, Spring 2012

You’ve worked with some incredible people. What’s been your most memorable professional experience so far? Working with [Alexander] McQueen was amazing. Designing headpieces for “Savage Beauty,” the exhibition of his work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, was a shift in my career too.

portrait and brush: greg kessler. runway and backstage, from top: dan & corina lecca; sean cunningham (3). hair products: courtesy redken

What is a good go-to hairstyle this season? Don’t underestimate the power of the pony: It’s classic, it’s versatile, it’s the hair equivalent of the white T-shirt.

Radiance UnMasked Introducing the transformative treatment mask formulated with Dr. Perricone’s legendary Plasma technology and Phytonutrient-rich Microcapsules to instantly detoxify, refne pores, soften wrinkles and illuminate the skin.

Bazaar beauty director Alexandra Parnass shares her makeup, hair, and skin must-haves 3

I have never worn blue eye shadow—until now. The trick to keeping it chic is to go sheer on your lids and blend it with a graphite shade. Copper works too. These from M.A.C. (1) and Laura Mercier (2) are my favorites. 4

Of course, there’s no way to pull this of if you’ve got dark circles under your eyes—Olay’s brightening concealer (3) works instantly. Balenciaga’s limited-edition metallic

fragrance bottle (4) is display-worthy, and the violet-infused scent is feminine and elegant. Back to blue: I feel naked without lots of eyeliner, so I layer this gel-smooth Marc Jacobs pencil (5) over my usual black. The sleek locks seen at Dior (6) will just look so right with spring’s beautifully cut shirts. My way: Apply Pantene Dry Shampoo generously; brush and part on the side; then

11 5

smooth, twist, pin, and spritz Redken hairspray.

When I use this new Clinique mascara (7), people ask me if I’m wearing lash extensions. Enough said. This amazing Acqua di Parma scent (8), with bergamot, sage, and

cypress notes, is perfect for a hot night in a sundress, preferably in Sardinia. Gold clips (9) remedy a bad hair day. Pretty 6

in pink: Lancôme’s gloss-balm hybrid (10) is a go-to. Guerlain’s soft brush (11) used with Sisley’s (surprisingly sheer) bronzer (12) delivers expertly sun-kissed cheeks.

La Prairie’s new skin saver (13) is a splurge, but it works. Now I just need some new clothes!

With their enviable manes, dramatic eyes, and statement lips, these ladies nailed more than just the clothes.

Taylor Swift may croon about young love and adolescent heartbreak (I know the words to all of her songs), but her sense of beauty is the height of sophistication. On Oscar night, the Southern singer channeled Veronica Lake, fully embracing the red lips and cat-eye aesthetic of Old Hollywood.

Lorde, the 17-year-old Kiwi songstress, has a sound beyond her years, and a look to match— she’s made a ’90s Goth purple pout her signature. So it’s no surprise that M.A.C. came knocking; Lorde’s line with the makeup giant is out next month.

Cara Delevingne’s famous eyebrows have inspired girls around the world to toss their tweezers. But at the launch of the model’s collection with Mulberry at London Fashion Week, it wasn’t her brows that caught my eye, it was her enhanced blowout (I got her to admit that there were a few extensions).

she’s a natural Lupita Nyong’o’s ascent to queen of the red carpet took just one season, hitting a crescendo at the Oscars, where she snagged a statue for 12 Years a Slave. The actress, who said the robin’s-egg blue of her Prada gown recalled her native Nairobi, clearly has an instinct for color: With her warm makeup and pink lip, she absolutely glowed.

Our editors will be checking in to the new Rosewood in London, which occupies the former Chancery Court building. If this past Fashion Week was any indication, it’s the chic traveler’s new go-to.

Mary Katrantzou’s Maldives “What could be better than the soothing climes of the Maldives? At the One & Only Reethi Rah resort I’m going to turn of the phone and step away from the e-mails. It’s the epitome of relaxation.”

Michael Kors’s Big Sur “The best way to unwind is with breakfast at Deetjen’s, a windswept walk on Pfeifer Beach, a visit to the spa at Post Ranch Inn, and drinks at Nepenthe, overlooking the Pacifc.”

Maria Cornejo’s Patagonia “I’m escaping New York City’s heat and heading to cooler temperatures and gorgeous nature in Chile. The Refugia is an architecturally stunning hotel in the Patagonian archipelago of Chiloé.” ➤ 102

WHAT TO DO We take little boats up and down the canals, along the Vltava River—it’s one of the best ways to see the city. Prague Castle always has interesting things going on—one year we saw a Cartier exhibition. Everyone should visit the Astronomical Clock in the Old Town Square. The Estates Theatre is a beautiful place to hear the Prague Opera, and I recommend walking over the Charles Bridge at night. Every 10 feet, there’s a diferent violinist playing Dvorak. hours of sleep

“The early bird catches the worm” rings true for me. When I’m home in NewYork, I wake up early so I can check e-mails and call my London agent, and start my day with a cup of Ristretto cofee from my Nespresso machine. 7:15 A.m. I step into my heated black-tile bathroom to get ready for the day and run a hot bath. Next, I drink Juice Press Aloe Water to rehydrate, and I take David Kirsch Wellness Co. Muscle Restore. I’ve worked out with him once or twice, but his supplements are beyond. This one supports muscle recovery and reduces fatigue and soreness. I also love coconut water from Juice Press, but one of my absolute favorite drinks is the all-green juice. It benefts the skin with the ultimate hydration. We all know that’s the beginning of everything anyway, beautiful skin. 7:30 A.m. My beauty regimen is simple but concise: I exfoliate my face once a week, then cleanse. If my skin needs an extra boost, I use SK-II Facial Treatment Mask and SK-II Eye Mask for about 20 minutes. It’s the best thing for a healthy, glowing complexion. My makeup routine is a small amount of base, a mascara, nude eye shadow, and a lip balm or a gloss. When I go out at night, I wear a blusher and tons and tons of mascara—very easy, very fresh, very light. I can’t sit around doing my own makeup all day—I wish I could. For fragrance, I apply a custom blend of essential oils and perfumes. I love spritzing Michelle Roques-O’Neil’s Restore Therapie Aura Spray, which is an infusion that instantly rebuilds your energy. Then I dress in my signature black outft. This usually involves a headband, a blouse, a cashmere sweater from Lainey of Ireland, and Lululemon pants. I top it all of with my Lorraine Schwartz diamond earrings and bangles and a jade ring I found in a market in China. I throw on custom black New Balance sneakers and of I go! I always wear black; I’m so busy working, and makeup gets quite messy. I use my fngertips instead of brushes; it creates a better look and allows more control over the pressure against the skin to blend using the heat of my fngertips. The work we do is tough, you know! I’ve seen team members become paralyzed for the whole day when some eye shadow falls on them. And I know how that feels—you feel grimy, there’s powder and foundation on you. So at least with black, you can easily disguise or wipe it of. It helps you look a little more pulled together when you’re working like crazy. I didn’t wear much makeup growing up, but my mother was obsessed. She would take me shopping on the weekends to search for new beauty products. There wasn’t much out there for black skin, so we would mix colors to create the proper shade. Wanting to improve the inclusion of various skin colors in makeup has been a huge motivation in my career. I currently work with Procter & Gamble Beauty, CoverGirl, Max Factor, and Dolce & Gabbana. Each brand is unique and committed to creating the best products, so I am always ensuring that their goals are kept in mind. 7:45 A.m. During Fashion Weeks, I typically work with anywhere from 30 to 50 assistants, all of whom are extremely talented and quick-handed. We travel with up to 75 bags loaded with materials and products, so we are prepared in any situation. Think 2,000 pairs of false eyelashes, 50 shades of foundation, powders, lipsticks, glosses, glitter, sequins, body makeup, rhinestones, latex, and masks. To top it of, we also bring a library of reference books for inspiration. When I’m traveling to and from shows, it’s quite a spectacle: We usually book ➤

two vans, a car, and three motorcycles in case we need to dart in and out of trafc. Fashion waits for no one! 9:00 A.M. My days are full of creative collaboration and intense teamwork. I am blessed to work with the best hairstylists, editors, publications, models, and designers. I met Steven Meisel in the early ’90s, and we have a very special friendship and lots of crazy memories. One photo shoot we had such extreme heat that the makeup melted and we had to use a portable icebox to save the lipsticks! 1:00 P.M. Lunch is served. I usually bring my own, which consists of lentil soup, a tuna salad, or a grilled fsh dish. 6:00 P.M. Shooting typically wraps around this time, and I head back home in my car. When I leave, I make sure I have all my devices. It’s quite a feat keeping track of my BlackBerry, iPad Mini, and iPhone 5, but I love them all! I have this app called Zinio, where you can buy and read all your magazines on your iPhone. I’m obsessed with architecture, interiors, decorating magazines. 6:15–8:15 P.M. When I arrive home, I turn on the BBC to catch up on the news. Most evenings, before dinner or going out to meet friends, I fnish up any additional projects I am working on, such as taking interviews, testing new makeup, creating face charts, color testing, or reviewing images from my library of art and fashion books. 8:30 P.M. If I’m having dinner at home, I usually have grilled sea bass with fennel, colorful vegetables, and quinoa. I love dark chocolate. I’ve got a thing for Lindt 70%—I’m getting ready for 85%. I have a lot of indulgences, but that’s not what I’m doing at the moment. I like to stay at home and relax or have dinner out with friends, though I don’t count that as “relaxing” because I’m running everywhere. If I have dinner plans or want to go out for a drink, I make reservations at diferent restaurants in the city. I adore Sant Ambroeus, Omar’s La Ranita, Crown, the Waverly Inn, and the Mark Restaurant by Jean-Georges. I always carry a few go-to beauty essentials: mascara, foundation, lipstick, eyeliner, and lip balm. A few of my favorites are CoverGirl Bombshell Volume Mascara and Dolce & Gabbana Smooth Eye Colour Quad in Stromboli. 10:00 P.M. I try to get home by this time to unwind with a relaxing bath. I love spas, but I rarely go anymore. I haven’t been to the Mandarin Oriental for about 900 years. I add a capful of Aromatherapy Associates in Relax Deep to my bath for a calm and restful night. I also use products from Santa Maria Novella; their Gardenia Milk Soap is luxurious and instantly softens your skin, and their Idrasol body cream smells beyond delicious. Really, it’s amazing. Finally, a bath is not complete without Diptyque or Agraria candles. 10:30 P.M. Friends rave about my comfortable sofa. It’s famous. I curl up on it to catch up on episodes of Mad Men, Scandal, The Good Wife, Downton Abbey, or Game of Thrones. Also, I’ve been known to shop online—Polyvore, Net-a-Porter, ShopStyle. I look for shoes at Saks and Bergdorf Goodman online. I may wear black most of the time, but everybody sells black. 11:00 P.M. I check my agenda for the next day and review my tentative schedule. 12:00 A.M. If I’m lucky, I am in bed by midnight and get at least fve hours of sleep. n

One of our favorites - Tinted Moisturizer is the ultimate multi-tasker that merges protection, hydration and perfection. It covers fawlessly, balances tone and texture, shields from the elements and embraces skin with a healthy glow.

Think of it as “the fawless 15”— in 3 fabulous formulas.

NEARLY OUT OF WOMEN * PREFERRED LAURA MERCIER TINTED MOISTURIZER OR LIKED IT AS MUCH AS THEIR BB CREAM: “Colour matched my skin” and felt it was “much better than my BB crème“

“With my BB Cream I needed a moisturizer…with this product I didn’t need one.”

“Long-lasting… even in the heat.”

“It gave me a smooth, even look.”

“My skin was healthier looking, it had a GLOW.”

*Source: Consumer Research Study, The Focus Room and SilkRoute Strategist, LLC (June 2013).

“It gave me

Sheer, silky, creamy and lightweight” “I LOVED the feel of my skin – felt like I was wearing nothing”

better coverage than the

Four iconoclasts on the images that made them feel beautiful

Kim GorDon

“I had completely forgotten about this picture until I came across it recently. It was taken by Laura Levine for Detour magazine in 1990. Laura was someone I’d always wanted to work with. When she took pictures of bands for the Village Voice, they were by far the most fattering. I’m wearing a foral unitard from Patricia Field that I bought because it reminded me of my mother—and the ’50s, in a way. Not that my mother wore forals, but there was a vibrancy about the pattern that reminded me of how beautiful she looked when she was going out to a party. Like a lot of the clothes at Patricia Field’s, it was more ‘club trendy’ than fashion-forward; a lot of transvestites shopped there. At that time I was coming more into fashion, but I was always more of a visual person than a fashionable one. The photo shows me being vulnerable, on the edge of a glamorous moment.”

Debbie Harry

“This dress was part of my wardrobe for the flm Union City. Chris Stein [Blondie’s guitarist] took this shot on a balcony, and I really felt gorgeous, with the warm, soft breeze. Chris always took the most beautiful pictures of me. He still does.”

Stevie nicKS “When Fleetwood Mac was on tour in Berlin in 2013, a friend brought me this hat. We call it a ‘spirit hat.’ When I wear it I feel connected to the spirit world—it makes me smile. I took this picture myself.” 176

Laurie SimmonS

“In 1980, Jan Groover invited me to sit for a portrait; she was photographing her friends and making platinum prints for them. At the time Jan was my favorite artist on earth, so I was really excited to sit for her and watch her shoot. I gave a lot of thought to what I wore and picked things that had complicated patterns and textures: a lavender angora shrug and a gold-and-tan leopard-print T-shirt that actually looked terrible together in real life. I’d recently had a perm—everyone wanted to go curly-frizzy then—and basically burned of most of my hair, so I’d cut it short. It’s really the only time in my life I’ve had short hair apart from when I was a newborn. I used to always try to include my hands in photos because my mother convinced me my hands were my best feature. (Are hands even a feature?) Anyway, I really liked the picture. I thought I looked pretty, tough, and strong, even though I grew my hair out immediately afterward.”

Author Sandra Tsing Loh recounts the extramarital tryst that transformed her life—for the better 178

y spectacular midlife crisis began when I was 46 under relatively innocent circ*mstances. On a lark for a girlfriend’s birthday, a group of us piled into an RV and drove from Los Angeles to Burning Man, the weeklong pagan arts festival in the Nevada desert. My production partner of 10 years, a married dad I’ll call Mr. Y, joined as our chauffeur. His company wasn’t unusual; he and I were best friends, and we often shared long days while our respective spouses were out of town on business. We each had kids and a signifcant other, and our relationship was purely platonic; the lack of sexual tension made for comfortable companionship. In this particular case, he was curious to see the festival too. And yet strange things happen in the desert. The simmering heat, freefowing beer, and surreal environment sparked surprising admissions from a number of women in the group, including some I’d considered happily married. A 49-year-old girlfriend was vigorously pursued by a 28-year-old in semi-medieval garb and a utilikilt, and we exchanged tearful stories about minivans and car seats and small children. Since when did it become okay for us to spend our evening hours eating Pepperidge Farm Goldfsh, often washed down with a light chardonnay? The responsible, working-mom facades we had built back home felt fimsy and remote. Mr. Y listened to our conversations, and as we watched the 100-foot Burning Man efgy collapse in fames, I suddenly had my own realization about him—that I loved him and wanted to be with him for the rest of my life. When I blurted out my feelings, Mr. Y admitted that he felt the same way, though he added, “I fgured we would always end up together, but it would be decades in the future, when our kids had moved on and our spouses had gotten sick of us.” I was shocked. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to have an extramarital afair. Nor did I believe that, in my mid-40s, I would fall in love again. I had been living with my hardworking, kind, stable husband for 20 years. We had a wonderful house and two sweet, funny daughters, ages six and eight at the time. We also had fulflling careers; he was a musician, and I was a writer and performer. His work involved lots of travel, leaving me alone for weeks on end. At frst I’d felt abandoned when he was gone, but over the years I’d gained enough emotional distance to make his absences tolerable, which we both, as co-managers of our relationship, considered a good development. My single-parenting style often amounted to putting my children in front of the TV with stale Halloween candy as I sat in bed writing on my laptop, and e-mails between my husband and me were gradually reduced to home-repair updates and packing lists. Mr. Y and I returned to our normal lives, but our afair continued in secrecy. After four months of sneaking around, however, the intensity of our feelings, coupled with the horror and guilt we felt from all the lying— the holidays were especially painful—made coming clean to our families seem like the best path. We thought that if we were calm and loving and had a team of therapists standing by, the news could be broken gently. Our careful plans were shattered, though, when the cat was let out of the bag too early (on a fraught cell-phone conversation during a drive ➤

word “Yet with that scarlet A newly emblazoned on my forehead, a whole world opened up.”

on the freeway, no less). The revelation exploded our households and devastated our children. It was too much for Mr. Y to bear, so he severed ties with me and attempted to reconcile with his wife. Meanwhile, I sequestered myself in a 750-square-foot shack flled with wine and tears and Ambien.

rying to regain control of my life, I wrote a magazine article that questioned the institution of marriage. That led to an ill-fated TV appearance during which I was asked, on air, about my afair. Hoping to avoid the issue, I stammered through an oblique answer and left feeling disgraced, guilty, and reduced to a bad cartoon, which arguably I was. Yet with that scarlet A newly emblazoned on my forehead, a whole world opened up. Strangers would confess things to me that they’d never told anyone else. A woman I met on a plane, who was traveling to a spa retreat for her 40th birthday, revealed that her handsome, successful husband was unbearably mean and cold in private. In fact, she’d had a 48-hour afair at a sales conference several months prior and still fantasized about it every day. She felt trapped, though, because her children were preschool age, and their abundant lifestyle was largely thanks to her husband. I found myself coming to a new understanding of all this messiness and heartbreak that, behind the masks we create for ourselves, so many of us silently endure. Including my girlfriends, my beloved girlfriends. They came to my shameflled hut with food and bedding and love and, for the most part, a total lack of judgment. One friend even brought over a bucket of cleaning supplies and washed my car for me. As often as there was pity, though, there was also curiosity. Many people in long-term marriages wonder what divorce is like, regardless of whether we want to act on it—or even dare to acknowledge it. When asked, I was able to state truthfully that, at least in my experience, it wasn’t a magic fx. More than anything, as my friends and I huddled in my little home, I found a safe place to talk. The unexpected boon of this full-on soul-and-body “peel” is that I emerged from this time completely renewed. When I turned 50, two years ago, I felt like my odometer had fipped back to the zeros. My birthday party that year was a riot of Veuve Clicquot and conga lines. Leading the pack were my daughters, to whom I have become a far more joyous and present mother. The cherry on top of my happier life was that Mr. Y had once again become part of it. After four months of trying to mend his marriage, he met me for lunch. We were wiser—not to mention emotionally exhausted—so it was hardly a passionate reunion. But it was the beginning of a joint acknowledgment that our feelings for each other were still intact. We eventually got back together, but not as cataclysmically; instead, we put time and thought into getting it right the second time. Mr. Y and I now live together happily. When we look back at all the grief that immediately followed our afair, it feels like a bad dream. But I wouldn’t erase a single one of those difcult moments, any more than I would take back the great moments of my marriage—like our wedding day and the births of our daughters. Even at the very rock bottom of it all, when Mr. Y was out of my life completely, I never wished that the events of Burning Man could be wiped from the past. Except, perhaps, for the sight of that utilikilt. n

Those encouraged by improvements in work-related or financial matters must not lose their perspective. Some tend to overinvest in areas that have yet to be tested. Find your voice and remind them of hidden pitfalls; it’s not wise to go charging ahead. MOTTO OF THE MONTH: Resentment and oil will surface.

While you need to be mindful of rules and guidelines, you shouldn’t let them cramp your style when dealing with vulnerable people or situations. A setup can be handled successfully only if you allow yourself to bend a few rules. Just make sure no one’s watching. MOTTO OF THE MONTH: A little stone may upset a large cart.

c ancer june 22–july 23

c apricorn december 22–january 20

You’ve held yourself back in a field in which much may be expected of you, but this month you’ll decide to step up to the plate. A lot will depend on the support of others. You won’t want to lean on them indefinitely, but you can learn from their experience. MOTTO OF THE MONTH: The way to be safe is to never feel secure.

Try not to rebel when it’s suggested that you perform routine tasks. Don’t challenge those who are able to overindulge; your turn will come. And before long you’ll see why you needed to go through a phase of being dutiful and hardworking. MOTTO OF THE MONTH: When money talks, the truth remains silent.

People anxious for your advice may have to wait in line. Loved ones will feel they deserve your help more than others.Think carefully about where your loyalties lie and hold on to your values. If you’re too materialistic, you may miss out in other ways. MOTTO OF THE MONTH: One small tear can ease a great sorrow.

V irgo august 24–september 23 Though others are right to question the cost of your more exotic ventures, you won’t want your behavior to be censored. Most, if not all, areas of conflict are best approached with respectful arguments rather than shouting matches. MOTTO OF THE MONTH: An acceptable plan today is better than a perfect plan tomorrow.

Taurus april 21–may 21

Foreign travel may appeal to you in May, so let others see how independent you can be. They may try to dissuade you from abandoning the tried and true, but youÕll feel more resolute than ever. Enjoy what it brings you. MOTTO OF THE MONTH: No matter how tall the mountain, it cannot block out the sun.

january 21–february 19

As you fluctuate between confidence and caution, you may struggle to fnd the best way forward in your responsibilities. Tell yourself that by the 24th you’ll be able to strike the proper balance. Until then negotiate a get-out clause with all major decisions. MOTTO OF THE MONTH: Every day must have its night.

p iSceS february 20–march 20 Secrets sometimes must be kept. This month you’ll come up against those who insist that news about the home should remain within the family. You’re growing tired of having to cover up instead of being transparent. If anyone can implement change, you can. MOTTO OF THE MONTH: Better a white lie that soothes than a truth that hurts.

L ibra september 24–october 23

S corpio october 24–november 22

a rieS march 21–april 20

By investing in your future, you will undoubtedly get a good return. You won’t realize how impressed others will be when they witness your single-minded, determined attitude. Anyone suggesting otherwise is clearly suffering from sour grapes. MOTTO OF THE MONTH: Too much laughter, too little sense.

Others will be curious about an arrangement that they would be too nervous to enter into themselves. Admit that you have misgivings, but as far as you’re concerned you’re taking a calculated risk and are confident about getting the best outcome. MOTTO OF THE MONTH: A good thing isn’t known until it’s lost.

Money matters aren’t as serious as they may seem at frst this month. Keep an eye on the balance sheet, but don’t let anyone accuse you of being extravagant. One person in particular needs to be shown just how fnancially astute you can be when you put your mind to it. MOTTO OF THE MONTH: A bold attempt is half of success.

Immediate pros: Less bloat. Better digestion. More energy. And a thinner you.

A whole-food, plant-based diet is not vegan. or raw. But recent research shows that it just might be the antidote to heart disease, cancer, and, yes, the last five pounds—for good. And while its biggest claim to fame came just a few months ago when Jay Z and Beyoncé announced they’d be eating plant-based for 22 days, it’s fast becoming the diet strategy du jour. But what exactly does “wholefood, plant-based” mean? “whole food is just that—whole,” says Caldwell B. esselstyn Jr., director of the Cardiovascular disease Prevention and Reversal program at the Cleveland Clinic wellness Institute. Along with fellow researcher T. Colin Campbell, a professor emeritus of nutritional biochemistry at Cornell University, esselstyn has spent years touting the diet as the cure to a long list of ailments, from heart disease (the number-one killer of women) to diabetes and high blood pressure. It may even help autoimmune diseases and chronic pain—not to mention its ability to boost energy and produce efortless weight loss. Campbell is best known for his 2005 book, The China Study, a nearly 50-year look at the predominantly plant-based eating habits of rural Chinese. “Breast cancer and colon cancer—and heart disease— were almost nonexistent,” says Campbell, whose latest book, Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition, came out last May. Those who have seen the acclaimed 2011 documentary Forks Over Knives (check it out on Netfix) will recognize both Campbell and esselstyn. one of the flm’s focal points is esselstyn’s nutritional study, for which he recruited a small group of patients with advanced coronary artery disease—including fve who had been given less than a year to live—and put them on a plant-based diet.Twelve years later, not only were the 17 subjects who stuck to the diet still alive, but they all had no further cardiac events and were symptom-free. “heart disease is a completely benign, food-borne illness,” esselstyn says.

But back to why you’ll lose weight: “once you start eating out of a box, bag, or can, the food is processed and may have unhealthy additions like sugar, salt, and oil,” he adds. And it’s this key aspect that diferentiates this diet from its cousin veganism, which also eschews all animal by-products. If you think about it, vegans—and vegetarians, for that matter—can live on heaps of pasta, oil-drenched veggies, and rolls of oreos. Then there’s the plant-based part. “what’s absolutely on the top of the list is green leafy vegetables,” says esselstyn, who recommends eating a fstful (“anointed with a few drops of balsamic vinegar”) with every meal. But that also means beans, legumes, whole grains, and every vegetable under the sun. what’s verboten? Anything that has a mother or a face: red meat, poultry, and fsh; as well as all dairy—milk, cream, butter, cheese, ice cream, and yogurt. Skeptics of a plant-based diet tend to focus more on what’s potentially lacking in nutrition, not on what it can ofer. The most notable is what Campbell calls our “reverence for protein.” he adds, “It’s a very important nutrient, but almost everyone overconsumes it and gets it from animal-based foods, so they end up decreasing their consumption of plant-based foods, antioxidants, and complex carbohydrates too.” Meanwhile, there are plenty of protein-packed plant-based sources—beans, lentils, chia seeds, quinoa, and even spinach and mushrooms. As for getting calcium without dairy? Kale, broccoli, butternut squash, carrots, and caulifower are all natural sources of the necessary nutrient. dietitian Stephanie Middleberg, founder of Middleberg Nutrition, a nutritional counseling service in New York, says,“It comes down to the fact that the majority of plant-based foods are ‘cleaner,’ meaning they have only one ingredient, and are easier to digest than dairy, meat, and even in some cases fsh,” she says.“eating them gets people back to the basics of good solid nutrition, which is to load up on what is seasonal and whole-food-based, plus it allows them to be more focused when eating out.” The other immediate pros of ditching cheese, added sugar, and red meat, and processed foods: less bloat. Better digestion. More energy. And a thinner you. we asked Amanda Chantal Bacon, a former chef who founded Moon Juice, a plant-based juice-and-super-food snack shop in los Angeles, to design a nine-day food plan. If you also drink two or more liters of water a day, avoid alcohol, and commit to at least three workouts, you could drop fve pounds or more, all while eating real food. So ask yourself, wwBd? ➤

PATIENT INFORMATION LATISSE® (la teece) (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution) 0.03% Read the Patient Information that comes with LATISSE® before you start using it and each time you get a refll. There may be new information. This leafet does not take the place of talking with your physician about your treatment. What is hypotrichosis of the eyelashes? Hypotrichosis is another name for having inadequate or not enough eyelashes. What is LATISSE® solution? LATISSE® solution is a prescription treatment for hypotrichosis used to grow eyelashes, making them longer, thicker and darker. Who should NOT take LATISSE ? Do not use LATISSE® solution if you are allergic to one of its ingredients. ®

Are there any special warnings associated with LATISSE® use? LATISSE® solution is intended for use on the skin of the upper eyelid margins at the base of the eyelashes. Refer to Illustration 2. DO NOT APPLY to the lower eyelid. If you are using LUMIGAN® or other products in the same class for elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), or if you have a history of abnormal IOP, you should only use LATISSE® under the close supervision of your physician. LATISSE use may cause darkening of the eyelid skin which may be reversible. LATISSE® use may also cause increased brown pigmentation of the colored part of the eye which is likely to be permanent.

How do I use LATISSE®? The recommended dosage is one application nightly to the skin of the upper eyelid margin at the base of the eyelashes only. Once nightly, start by ensuring your face is clean, makeup and contact lenses are removed. Remove an applicator from its tray. Then, holding the sterile applicator horizontally, place one drop of LATISSE® on the area of the applicator closest to the tip but not on the tip (see Illustration 1). Then immediately draw the applicator carefully across the skin of the upper eyelid margin at the base of the eyelashes (where the eyelashes meet the skin) going from the inner part of your lash line to the outer part (see Illustration 2). Blot any excess solution beyond the eyelid margin. Dispose of the applicator after one use. Repeat for the opposite upper eyelid margin using a new sterile applicator. This helps minimize any potential for contamination from one eyelid to another.

Illustration 2

It is possible for hair growth to occur in other areas of your skin that LATISSE® frequently touches. Any excess solution outside the upper eyelid margin should be blotted with a tissue or other absorbent material to reduce the chance of this from happening. It is also possible for a difference in eyelash length, thickness, fullness, pigmentation, number of eyelash hairs, and/or direction of eyelash growth to occur between eyes. These differences, should they occur, will usually go away if you stop using LATISSE®. Who should I tell that I am using LATISSE®? You should tell your physician you are using LATISSE® especially if you have a history of eye pressure problems. You should also tell anyone conducting an eye pressure screening that you are using LATISSE®. What should I do if I get LATISSE® in my eye? LATISSE® solution is an ophthalmic drug product. LATISSE® is not expected to cause harm if it gets into the eye proper. Do not attempt to rinse your eye in this situation. What are the possible side effects of LATISSE®? The most common side effects after using LATISSE® solution are an itching sensation in the eyes and/or eye redness. This was reported in approximately 4% of patients. LATISSE® solution may cause other less common side effects which typically occur on the skin close to where LATISSE® is applied, or in the eyes. These include skin darkening, eye irritation, dryness of the eyes, and redness of the eyelids. If you develop a new ocular condition (e.g., trauma or infection), experience a sudden decrease in visual acuity, have ocular surgery, or develop any ocular reactions, particularly conjunctivitis and eyelid reactions, you should immediately seek your physician’s advice concerning the continued use of LATISSE® solution. What happens if I stop using LATISSE®? If you stop using LATISSE®, your eyelashes are expected to return to their previous appearance over several weeks to months. Any eyelid skin darkening is expected to reverse after several weeks to months. Any darkening of the colored part of the eye known as the iris is NOT expected to reverse and is likely permanent.

DO NOT APPLY in your eye or to the lower lid. ONLY use the sterile applicators supplied with LATISSE® to apply the product. If you miss a dose, don’t try to “catch up.” Just apply LATISSE® solution the next evening. Fifty percent of patients treated with LATISSE® in a clinical study saw signifcant improvement by 2 months after starting treatment. If any LATISSE® solution gets into the eye proper, it is not expected to cause harm. The eye should not be rinsed. Don’t allow the tip of the bottle or applicator to contact surrounding structures, fngers, or any other unintended surface in order to avoid contamination by common bacteria known to cause infections. Contact lenses should be removed prior to application of LATISSE® and may be reinserted 15 minutes following its administration. Use of LATISSE® more than once a day will not increase the growth of eyelashes more than use once a day. Store LATISSE® solution at 36o - 77oF (2o-25oC).

General Information about LATISSE® Prescription treatments are sometimes prescribed for conditions that are not mentioned in patient information leafets. Do not use LATISSE® solution for a condition for which it was not prescribed. Do not give LATISSE® to other people. It may not be appropriate for them to use. This leafet summarizes the most important information about LATISSE® solution. If you would like more information, talk with your physician. HARPER’s bAzAAR: This is your second collaboration with Topshop. What drew you back to designing? And how was the experience putting together this collection diferent from the last one?

Hb: You love to wear your Topshop looks. What would you do if you ran into another girl wearing your outft?

KAtE MOss: Topshop

is the only brand I’ve ever collaborated with on a fashion collection. It just feels like home working with them again. With this collection we had more time, so we could be really selective about the pieces that are included. Each one is a statement piece.

KM: I love seeing other people wearing the clothes! I remember seeing a gorgeous girl wearing one of the foral tea dresses from the frst collection—she looked great. I was so excited that I called her over and we had a picture taken together. Hb: What’s your one fail-safe piece of clothing ? KM: A good jacket. We’ve got plenty in this collection, like the gold-sequined one or the tailored tux jackets. Hb: If you had to boil your style down to fve key items, what would they be? KM: A black tuxedo jacket, a really good pair of jeans, a pair of heels, a great bag, and, of course, a little black dress. Hb: So many women mention you as one of their style heroes. Who are yours? Is there someone who was like a style mentor for you? KM: I didn’t really have a mentor, but I have always defnitely been inspired by the ’70s—the Stones, Patti Smith, Anita Pallenberg … Hb: What things has your daughter taught you? KM: My daughter, Lila, is my style critic. She’ll say, “No, Mummy, you can’t wear that.” She’s very good. I do trust her instinct. Hb: What is something that you are better at now than when you were younger? KM: Having the confdence to say no to things that I don’t feel comfortable with. I defnitely feel more comfortable in my own skin since turning 40. Hb: What was it like meeting the queen for the frst time at Buckingham Palace? What did you wear? KM: It was a real privilege to be invited to the palace. I wore a vintage blue chifon dress and a mink stole, and sat with Janet Street-Porter and J.K. Rowling. Hb: What do you want to do in the next 10 years? KM: Keep busy and stay happy. n

lame the media, blame the mirror, but to have a woman’s body in 2014 is to be made utterly aware of all the ways it can be manipulated into being a slightly better body—and bathing suits defnitely don’t help. The spotlight inevitably turns to cellulite, the unseemly structural change in the skin that, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, afects nearly 90 percent of all women regardless of activity level or body type. The result is a dimpling—most commonly on the hips, thighs, and buttocks—that’s compared, at best, to orange peel and, at worst, to cottage cheese. The enemy is unsparing in its scope. “I’ve done cellulite treatments on women who were marathon runners, triathletes, even one who had done the Ironman seven times, and they all still had cellulite,” says dermatologist Bruce Katz, director of the Juva Skin & Laser Center in New York. “It’s genetic, and it’s universal.” Cellulite occurs when clotted pockets of fat are fractured by vertical bands of connective tissue (called septae), creating a hills-and-valleys efect under the skin. As skin begins to loosen with age, those anxiety-attack-provoking nooks and crannies become more pronounced. In the past, even the most celebrated remedies produced only temporary results—if that. Now seemingly every spa ofers cellulite-targeting treatments, and in the fght against this insidious foe, one name keeps coming up: Anushka Blau. The tightly toned 69-year-old entrepreneur (“I have a better body now than when I was 25,” she says) has been called a “cellulite exorcist extraordinaire,” and has spent more than four decades searching for a cure, founding a namesake treatment center and buzzed-about cellulite clinic in New York before relocating to Palm Beach in 2001. “Cellulite has to do with genetics; it has to do with hormones,” says Blau, noting that men are largely not susceptible to it. “We have the curves, but we have the curse too.” Blau’s spa ofers a full-service life revamp over a fve-week program (from $895), replete with nutrition guidelines based on the 5:2 diet, an extensive supplement regimen (including vitamins B, C, and D, as well as valerian, L-carnitine, selenium, glucosamine, and a bevy of probiotics and CoQ10s), barre classes, thigh-contouring massage, and circulation-enhancing and detoxing body-sleeve wraps. Add to that eight sessions with the SmoothShapes XV system (from $1,112), which combines vacuum and massage while emitting both light and laser energy. “Our approach is a whole-life, whole-body approach,” she explains—and some hard work is required. “You can get a surgical treatment and, sure, one area might be cellulite-free, but to treat just one area is to put on a Band-Aid; it’s not really a cure. You want someone else

to take care of your body? Well, you need to take responsibility for it.” Blau’s clients rave about her methods. “I’m in the business of helping people take control and change their lives,” she says. In the midst of this age-old war of attrition, a small clutch of technologically advanced treatments has practitioners across the country claiming victory in sight, and a few are beginning to plant their fa*gs. Katz prefers Cellulaze, a heavily lauded quick-recovery laser procedure that simultaneously “melts the fat, cuts the fbrous bands, stimulates collagen, and tightens the skin.” One session can cost between $4,000 and $5,000, removes cellulite, and apparently impairs its ability to return without keeping you out of work for more than a day. Katz notes that patients can see the results in a matter of weeks. But does it work? “For the three years we’ve been using Cellulaze, we have not had a patient’s cellulite reoccur,” he says, and he has published studies along with the 3-D imaging to prove it. “This treats the problem at the root. It’s really game-changing.” Cellulaze isn’t the only game in town. Paul Jarrod Frank, a dermatologist and director of the 5th Avenue Dermatology Surgery and Laser Center in New York, favors Vasersmooth, which is similar to Cellulaze, only it uses ultrasound rather than laser technology. “Ultrasound is the new laser,” he says, and the advantages are not insubstantial: Ultrasound technology is essentially “color-blind” to skin tone, and the wand is usually signifcantly larger, for treating a number of areas.“I make an incision about the size of a pencil eraser, nothing that will leave a scar,” Frank explains,“and take the ultrasound wand. It’s like ironing clothes, except I’m doing it from the inside, and it’s breaking up the fbrous bands, melting lumpy fat pockets, and stimulating collagen growth. The procedure takes roughly an hour, and patients usually see results within a week or two.” It’s a bloodless procedure, he adds, with costs ranging from $3,500 to $7,000, depending on the amount of cellulite.“It’s the frst thing I’ve done in the last 15 years of fat removal and body contouring where I’ve seen something that really makes a long-term diference without maintenance.” For those with light cellulite (read: orange peel), Frank suggests a somewhat counterintuitive route—fllers.“Instead of a $7,000 procedure, I’ll use a hyaluronic acid fller like Radiesse in the dimples,” he says. A syringe of Radiesse costs about $900, and because of the overall lack of tension on the skin of the leg, dermal fllers will last longer than they might in other areas.“There are always a few stubborn puckers,” he notes.“A lot of patients come in and say,‘I have these two spots here; can I do something?’ and I’ll drop a syringe of fller in there. And boom.” Life changed—well, sort of. “There’s never going to be one laser or injection that fxes everyone’s cellulite,” says Frank.“The advantage now is that we have several options. Nothing is a magic wand. But we are much better of than we were.” Magic wands or no, there’s always the hope of a miracle in a bottle. Sisley’s latest foray into the market is Cellulinov ($242), which promises to fush out fat cells while reinforcing sagging skin, thanks to a Continued on page 281

PORTRAIT OF A LADY As a successful American entrepreneur, Lynn Forester de Rothschild has made a career—and a life—out of getting people to think differently. Now, with a power-packed conference this month in London (and a little help from her friend Bill Clinton), she has her sights set on reshaping our economic future. n November 7, 2010, a newcomer joined the Philadelphia Eagles cheerleaders on the feld to help spur on the team in front of 60,000 fans, at a home game against the Indianapolis Colts. Few on hand would have guessed that the lithe, energetic blonde with great legs and a megawatt smile was close to three decades older than most of her bouncy squad mates—or that she has occasionally spent weekends with the Queen of England. But such is the life of remarkable contrasts led by my dear friend Lynn Forester, now known as Lady de Rothschild. “I convinced the owners of the team that we need to engage women—particularly older women—with the NFL,” recalls Lynn, who was 56 at the time and celebrates her 60th birthday in July. “Needless to say, I couldn’t be a linebacker.” I’ve known Lynn for 25 years, and I can’t help but think that Henry James would have been fascinated by her: a vivacious, brainy girl from a proud middle-class New Jersey family who grew up to marry the reigning patriarch of one of Europe’s most storied and longevous fnancial dynasties. Her husband, Sir Evelyn de Rothschild, served as an usher at Queen Elizabeth’s coronation, and later headed the bank that used to help set the price of gold in the world. Lynn, though, made her own fortune before she married into one. While working for the magnate John Kluge’s Metromedia in the ’80s, she was an early investor in cellular technology, an area that eventually became the cornerstone of her own telecommunications empire. Together she and Sir Evelyn now run E.L. Rothschild, a private investment frm they founded that looks after their interests in the Economist Group, among its other holdings; the couple also preside over a transatlantic brood that includes fve kids (two of Lynn’s from a previous marriage and three of Sir Evelyn’s), with four homes on two continents. ➤

ynn’s warmth and intelligence have won her a legion of friends and fans in numerous spheres of life, from business and the arts to politics, including Bill and Hillary Clinton, Sting, Bono, Tony Blair, Carlos Slim, V.S. Naipaul, and Frederick Forsyth. She is a legendary hostess, throwing book parties for Hillary and organizing fund-raisers for Britain’s Tate museums along with myriad other dinners, events, and blockbuster gatherings. She sits on the boards of Estée Lauder and the Peterson Institute for International Economics and is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. But the big date on Lynn’s calendar right now is May 27, when E.L. Rothschild will cohost with Fiona Woolf, the lord mayor of London, “The

Conference on Inclusive Capitalism,” a high-powered symposium at the Mansion House and Guildhall, with a list of keynote speakers that includes former president Clinton, International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde, and the governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney. The basic theme of the topics under discussion will be how to restore capitalism’s battered image around the world and the ways that the private sector can both proft and achieve the broader purpose of building stronger economies and communities. “There are some very infuential people who are absolutely appalled by what led to the fnancial crisis and by the growing inequality and lack of opportunity in the world,” Lynn says. “The point of this conference is to bring these concerned people together in one place to

discuss the future in pragmatic terms. What can powerful corporations and investors do to make capitalism work for more people around the globe? In order for things to improve, we have to generate a new sense of trust and optimism. It’s imperative.” You can’t be friends with Lynn and not know that the woman she most admires is Hillary Clinton. Lynn’s own entrée into politics came in 1976, when she worked on New York Democrat Daniel Patrick Moynihan’s frst senatorial campaign. She met the Clintons when she became actively involved in Bill’s presidential run in 1992, and has remained close with them ever since. “What I loved most about Hillary from the beginning was that she made Chelsea her frst priority—I identifed with her as a mother,” Lynn says. “And then I watched her

navigate the very difcult waters of being a public fgure.” In fact, Lynn’s commitment to her friend is so absolute that when Hillary dropped out of her own race for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008, Lynn jumped ship to support the Republican candidate, Senator John McCain of Arizona—a move that some Democrats regarded as heresy. “I knew that Hillary would be a great president,” she says.“I had nothing against Obama, but I believed that he had neither the experience nor the temperament to be leader of the free world. People excoriated me to my face, and mainly behind my back. But unlike most of my friends, I’m not disappointed in Obama. I saw it coming. For the sake of our country I pray for him to succeed.” Lynn Forester grew up in Oradell, New Jersey, the only girl among three brothers. Her father was an entrepreneur ➤

and executive in the aviation industry. Her mother was a homemaker who played the piano in church on Sundays. “Mom was a conservative Republican who was related to the late, great Herbert Hoover,” she says. “Let’s just say that we had our diferences. But before she died in 2009, she was happy that I fnally voted Republican.” Lynn grew up more interested in football than in dolls. “I was part nerd, part skinny waif,” she says. “I drove my brothers nuts by being ultracompetitive with them. My parents wholly approved.” Her entrepreneurial spirit blossomed early: When Lynn was in high school, her mother took her on a trip to Israel. Lynn had read that Israelis loved American blue jeans but had a hard time fnding them. “I brought along fve pairs and sold them for 10 times my cost,” she says.

ynn went on to attend Pomona College in California and law school at Columbia University. But it was in the early ’80s, while practicing law at the Wall Street frm Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, that she met Kluge, who hired her to help him acquire small companies around the U.S. that held local cellular licenses. The experience gave Lynn the knowledge and the wherewithal to go into partnership with Motorola, owning and running a series of telecommunications companies, which made her a multimillionaire. She sold her stake in one, TPI, to Motorola in 1995 for a fgure reportedly between $80 million and $100 million. She went on to found another, FirstMark Communications, which had signifcant interests in broadband in Europe; in 2000, Fortune listed her as the fourth most powerful woman in business on the Continent. “John was one of my most important mentors,” she says of Kluge. “He said, ‘Never think about your net worth, only about your vision, your excitement, and your commitment. The money will follow.’ ” While Lynn’s career took of, her private life wasn’t always smooth sailing. Her frst marriage—to a law school sweetheart—was short-lived. Her second, in 1983, was to then–Manhattan Borough President Andrew Stein, who is the father of her two sons,

Ben and Jake, both now in their 20s.“Our marriage wasn’t the fairy tale it seemed to the outside world,” says Lynn of her union with Stein, which lasted a decade. “My success meant a lot to me. Of course, there were times when I felt conficted. I think women have more of a struggle balancing business and family. As long as the boys knew they were my frst loves, I felt I was getting the balance right.” It was in 1998 that she met Sir Evelyn de Rothschild, at the Bilderberg Conference in Turnberry, Scotland, when they were introduced by a mutual friend, Henry Kissinger. The couple exchanged vows in London two years later, and were feted back in the States at a wedding party given by Senator Moynihan and his wife, Liz, in a private room at the Capitol, where they were toasted by the Clintons, among others. “After two marriages I was convinced I’d never fall in love again,” Lynn says. “Then

Evelyn turns out to be the love of my life.” Sir Evelyn soon became friendly with the Clintons, and Lynn got to know the Queen and Prince Philip. (The Rothschilds have spent time at both the White House and Windsor Castle.) In marrying Sir Evelyn, Lynn also became the chatelaine of Ascott House, a Rothschild family residence in rural Bedfordshire that was gifted by Evelyn’s father to Britain’s National Trust in 1949. Ascott is flled with Rothschild ancestral treasures, but Lynn wanted to put her own stamp on the estate. In creating the Lynn Garden, she and Sir Evelyn hired Belgian landscapers Jacques and Peter Wirtz to help create a modern earthwork of green lushness and Zen-like grass mounds. The contribution she is most proud of is the artist Richard Long’s stone piece Ascott Circle, juxtaposed with a bronze Venus fountain designed by the 19th-century sculptor

Thomas Waldo Story. Lynn has even done that very English thing of trying to breed the Ascott Rose, seeking the delicate peach color from one of the ancient Chinese vases in the estate’s collection. The couple’s other residences—an airy town house in London that once served as the painter John Singer Sargent’s studio, a duplex overlooking the East River in New York, and a new compound on Martha’s Vineyard—feature a more contemporary aesthetic, with pale colors and sleek furniture set of by spotlit paintings and sculptures from an art collection that includes works by Agnes Martin, Ellsworth Kelly, Cy Twombly, Robert Rauschenberg, Luc Tuymans, Bill Viola, and Gerhard Richter.“I like casual elegance, a calm monochromatic ambiance that is cozy and comfortable,” Lynn says. She hopes that initiatives like “The Conference on Inclusive Capitalism” will help change the way that people think about the future—a daunting task, but a worthy one for a woman who relishes a challenge. “Frankly, we are the generation that fought against racism and sexism—let’s not also be the generation that lost the American dream,” she says. Lynn, of course, is still a die-hard Hillary Clinton supporter (“She’s an amazing woman with a profound strategic vision for America that I very much believe in”), but, interestingly enough, she also remains friendly with John McCain, serving on the board of the McCain Institute for International Leadership. Lynn now feels completely at home on both continents—a grand English lady and an American good old gal. Her older son, Ben, is a partner in his own investment frm, and her younger son, Jake, runs the flm side at Russell Simmons’s Def Pictures. “Being a mom was always my frst priority,” she says. “Maybe I was naive, but I also believed I could have a career.” She continues, “The boys probably never knew how hard it was for me to be away from them. But I think kids thrive when they have a mother who adores them and respects them as individuals.” And one tough enough to survive the three-hour full-squad workout that preceded her professional cheerleading debut. “I was so exhausted and achy,” Lynn recalls. “I texted Evelyn and the boys and said, ‘In the event that I die tonight, I love you all!’ ” n

unique blend of longan-seed extract, red algae, Indian lotus, cafeine, cedrol, and ginkgo biloba. The product claims to frm and tone skin as it reduces dimpling by 30 percent in four weeks by increasing blood circulation and limiting oxygenation of the fat cells. “Efectively, we’re putting the fat cells on a diet while promoting circulation and getting rid of that toxin buildup that causes cellulite,” says Sisley national trainer Shawn McLoughlin. “We’re hitting the problem from all different angles. We’re looking at the source, not just treating the symptom.”

research, department of dermatology, at Columbia University Medical Center in New York. Finding efective treatments has proved extremely difcult, however. “Most trials center on male-pattern baldness, which is very diferent. Women lose hair all over, while men tend to lose the hair on the top of their head and keep a fringe between their ears.” Current transplant methods involve removing thousands of hairs from that denser area in the back and relocating them on the top of the head. Women are rarely candidates for transplants because they don’t have enough hair in any one area to spare. “And Rogaine may help retain some hair, but it won’t grow new hair,” adds Christiano. Now women with thinning hair have a signifcant reason to be optimistic. Christiano and her team have developed a groundbreaking technique that clones human hair. “The holy grail of hair restoration is being able to start with a small number of cells and have them multiply,” she says. “Our method is game-changing because we need only a few hundred donor hairs, the size of a dime or a nickel, instead of thousands. Even women with severe thinning can aford that.” After removing hairs from volunteers, researchers separated out the dermal papillae (the connective tissue at the base of the hair follicle), put them in a petri dish, then fed them tissue culture and nutrients.Within a few weeks, they started to multiply. The cultured papillae were then injected into human skin that had been grafted onto mice, where the hair began to grow on its own. Tests showed that the hair matched the DNA of the human donors. Christiano is hoping to move on to clinical trials within two to three years and thinks the procedure will be FDA-approved in fve to 10 years. Dermatologist Paradi Mirmirani, an expert in hair loss with the Permanente Medical Group in Vallejo, California, is excited about the prospect. “Transplants in women can be difcult to do if there isn’t enough donor hair. This would fnally solve the problem of supply.” And as far as beauty miracles go, it will certainly be worth waiting for. n

ecreted-away Amazonian seeds and trademarked peptide chains aside, smearing on over-the-counter creams containing stimulants like cafeine and cayenne pepper may help circulation, but doctors insist that these alone are unlikely to efect any real change. “There’s not one single product that’s going to make cellulite better,” says New York dermatologist Cheryl Karcher. “There are some products that are going to make cellulite look better.” Certain silica-including unguents have the nifty knack of lessening the appearance of cellulite “solely due to the way they refect light of the skin.” (Of course, that Vaselineover-the-lens efect is nothing to be scofed at. Witness the incredible sales and cult followings of Soap & Glory Sit Tight Intense XS [$38], Nivea Skin Firming Cellulite Gel-Cream [$13.49], and Clarins Body Lift Cellulite Control [$69].) Frank agrees. “Cafeine restricts the blood cells, so cafeine-rich products could ofer some kind of temporary appearance of cellulite reduction. But cellulite is a deep issue, and it’s a matter of penetration,” he says. “The job of our skin is to keep things out, so it’s unlikely that you’re going to have an over-the-counter product with a medicine that’s active enough to afect cellulite.” Clearly, though, advances are being made every day, from every possible angle. “I’ve seen thousands of women change their lives,” says Blau.“We’re all in this fght together.” n

It was 1961, and Sophia Loren was shooting her frst Harper’s Bazaar cover. Photographed by Richard Avedon, she posed with the young Halston. (That’s him, hat in hand, behind her.) It was a triumph of sorts because, as Loren recalls, “when I started my career, everyone said my nose was too big, my mouth was too large.” But she believed that the right lighting would make people think twice. “I put myself in Avedon’s hands. I said, ‘Sophia, do you think I can teach him something? Nada.’ So I let him do whatever he wanted.” Now, 53 years later, the actress’s beauty endures, giving credence to her glamour equation. “I rather like myself,” she adds, laughing. Of her signature soft, light lips, she says, “I always choose lipsticks that stay on, but pale, because I have a big mouth. Dark lips I don’t like—they show too much.” The secret to her movie-star hair? Blending in a few volume-enhancing extensions. What really ties her look together, however, is the eyes: “I accentuate my

They become expressive.” While she still follows the same cosmetic rituals as when she was young, Loren—soon to star as a spurned aging lover in her son Edoardo Ponti’s adaptation of Jean Cocteau’s The Human Voice—has elegantly embraced each new stage of life. “I’m much more beautiful inside than I was,” she says, adding coyly, “It’s not bad, how I look. Brava, Sophia! I give myself a kiss in the mirror.” Romy Oltuski

STYLIST’S TIP Pair your culottes with a cropped or a tucked-in top.

Keep It CuLotte Leave your skinny trousers in the back of your closet in favor of something a little roomier. Culottes are making a comeback, and they’re chicer than ever, whether perfectly creased or pleated. Anchor the roomy style with a substantial ankle boot or a brogue. ➤

It’s time to relax. Spring’s ensembles eschew the tailored look for slouchy silhouettes, as designers like Alexander Wang, Michael Kors, and Lanvin’s Alber Elbaz all loosened up, with laid-back suiting that still means business. n
