How to Get and Call Your Horse in Skyrim (2024)

Horses are a handy way to get around Skyrim, but finding your horse can sometimes be a pain. If you’re looking for an easy way to call your horse in Skyrim, we’ve got you covered. In this post, we’ll share a few tips on how to quickly and easily find your four-legged friend.

Whether you’re just starting out in the game or you’re a seasoned vet, these tips will help make horse riding a breeze. So saddle up, and let’s get started!

How to Get a Horse in Skyrim

Skyrim offers many ways to travel around the world and explore its vast wilderness. One way to get around quickly is to obtain a horse. Horses can be obtained in a variety of ways.

Simply Buy One

Horses are available for purchase from some of the game’s merchants and can be purchased for about 1000 gold coins. This is the simplest and most straightforward way to get a horse, yet it’s hardly worth it unless you are flush with gold.

Tame One

There have been a few wild horses in Skyrim since the release of the game’s Anniversary Edition. You can find these in the open plains of the game. In a fun twist, one of these wild stallions is actually a unicorn.

Steal One

Sometimes the easiest method of getting a mount is just by stealing one. If you are caught, however, you will earn yourself a bounty. Yet, if you manage to take one without being seen, you will suffer no bounty. However, horses you steal will not continue to follow you and cannot be called in Skyrim.

Therefore, if your goal is to learn how to call a horse in Skyrim, this is probably not the best method for you.

Earn One

The last method of earning a horse in Skyrim is by completing quests. Some quest rewards include the gift of a mount. For instance, when you complete the Dark Brotherhood questline, you will be gifted with Shadowmere, a special dark horse.

The best mounts in the game are really earned through quests, such as Arvak the Skeletal Horse, which responds to a Conjuring spell when you want to call him to you.

How to Summon or Call Your Horse to You

For regular horses, there is no way to simply call your horse in Skyrim, but before you go and get mad that you got duped, there are a number of alternative methods that work just as well. Additionally, you can call some special horses to you in Skyrim (more on that later). We’ll cover each of these methods in the next sections.

You Can Call a Horse to You by Fast Traveling

If you have already tamed a horse in Skyrim, it is possible to call your horse to you by fast traveling. To do so, open up the map and select your destination. When ready, press the ‘Fast Travel’ button, and your horse will appear near you when you arrive.

This can be useful if you need to move a large distance without having to run or ride your horse the whole way but want it when you get closer for even faster travel.

Additionally, if you’ve totally misplaced your horse and you don’t have a special horse that can be summoned, this is one of the few ways to easily call your horse to you in Skyrim.

Special Steeds that Can be Called to You in Skyrim

In Skyrim, there are a number of special horses with unique abilities. Some of them can be called to your side, circumventing the issue of vanilla Skyrim not having a function to call your horse.

Arvak the Skeletal Horse

Once you have obtained Arvak by finding his skull on the altar in the Soul Cairn, you can use the Summon Arvak spell. This spell will allow you to call this unique mount from anywhere in the open world.

This means that you can’t summon him within a walled city like Solitude. Yet, once you are outside, you will be able to call and mount this horse in Skyrim.

Note: Arvak can be resummoned to your side on death. This makes sense because he’s basically undead to begin with. This trick can also be used in combat, as he can soak up a decent amount of damage.

The Daedric Horse from Skyrim’s Anniversary Edition can also be Called

After you have obtained the Daedric mount, you will also be able to summon it. You will gain a spell similar to the one mentioned before called “Summon Daedric Horse.” This

will let you call your Daedric horse in Skyrim whenever you want.

Skyrim Mods that Allow You to Call Your Horse

If you’re looking for an easier way to call your horse in Skyrim, you can use mods. Mods provide a variety of features that give the game more life and allow players to customize their experience.

One such Skyrim mod is “Call Your Horse,” which enables you to summon your most recently used, tamed horse, regardless of its location. This mod adds a lesser power that has no Magicka cost associated with it. You will only be able to use this ability outside, though.

If this sounds like the best method to call your horse in Skyrim for you, you can find that mod here.

Where to Find Your Horse without Having to Call It

If you own the Hearthfire DLC, you can find your mount at your stable.

Final Thoughts

We hope you enjoyed this guide on how to call your horse in Skyrim. Horses are a great way to get around the map quickly, and they can be very helpful in some combat situations.

If you don’t have one of the named horses featured here or the Call Your Horse mod installed, you can still fast-travel to any outdoor location, and your horse will be there waiting for you.
