Ingredients

To make this chicken dumplings recipe, you’ll need:

  • Rotisserie chicken – The best option for a lazy chicken and dumplings recipe! However, you can use boneless chicken thighs or chicken breasts if you have more time on your hands (I typically used pre cooked chicken though).
  • Fresh veggies – In this chicken and dumplings recipe I used celery, carrots, peas, garlic, and shallot. If you ask me, chicken and dumplings is one of those recipes that you can put whatever fresh vegetables you have on hand into the soup and it’ll taste great. So, use what you have!
  • Chicken broth – Whether you use store bought or homemade chicken broth, it’s a crucial ingredient in this recipe. We’re not using any water in our chicken and dumplings and need something flavorful to cook this creamy chicken soup in! Feel free to sub with chicken stock.
  • Heavy cream – The heavy cream gives this soup more flavor as well as it’s creaminess.
  • Butter – Used to soften the vegetables and adds flavor to the dish.
  • Flour – Used to thicken the chicken soup.
  • Biscuits – Store bought biscuits are a must have if you’re short on time! If you’re not, I highly recommend making your own dumplings for this recipe.
  • Seasonings – Fresh thyme, fresh rosemary, salt, and pepper are used in this recipe.

That’s all you’ll need to make some homemade chicken and dumplings! If you’re feeling ambitious, though, feel free to make some homemade dumplings. For that, you’ll need additional flour, baking powder, and vegetable oil!

When I make dumpling dough next, I’ll make sure to document my step by step process for making homemade dumplings and write up a recipe but for now… store bought are great!

How to make chicken and dumplings

Homemade chicken and dumplings coming right up!!

Heat the butter in a slow cooker over medium heat. Once melted, add the carrots and celery and soften. Add in the shallot and cook until translucent, then and the garlic and cook until it’s fragrant.

Add the flour to the pot and toss the vegetables for about two minutes. Next, add the fresh herbs and chicken broth to the pot and give everything a good stir.

Pour in the heavy cream, frozen peas, and rotisserie chicken to the slow cooker and stir to combine. Top off with the dumplings, cover, and cook for 15 minutes.

Remove the cover and insert a toothpick into a dumpling. If it comes out clean, you’re done baking! You can now plate your chicken and dumplings and enjoy while it’s hot!

Notes – If you’d like a thicker soup, feel free to add 1:1 ratio of cornstarch and water to the boiling broth!

Frequently asked questions

Can I make this in the instant pot?

You can! Instant pot chicken and dumplings is a bit different than the method listed below, though.

Essentially, you’ll add everything to the instant pot and cook on high pressure for about 10 minutes. Then, use the quick release to let the steam out and break apart the dumplings.

Serve and enjoy!

Do homemade chicken and dumplings make for good leftovers?

Oh yes, absolutely! I’d argue that chicken and dumplings tastes better the next day.

Like most soup and stew recipes, you may need to ad a bit more water or broth to thin the chicken and dumplings out, as the dumplings will most likely soak up whatever they’re able to overnight!

How long will this chicken and dumplings last?

Store in an airtight container for up to four days in the fridge, preferably less. The longer it sits, the more the dumplings will start to disintegrate in the liquid.
