Woman accused of using personal Zelle account to steal money from apartment complex in Riviera Beach
A Port St. Lucie woman was arrested in Riviera Beach on suspicion of fraud.Ashley R. Clayton was arrested Monday and is facing charges of grand theft, fraud, embezzlement, criminal use of personal identification information and making false entries in corporate books.According to court documents, Clayton was an employee of an apartment complex in Riviera Beach. Clayton, who was employed by the apartment complex for three months, is accused of collecting apartment-related payments by having residents Zelle payments to her personal bank account as well as giving her blank money orders.During the scheme, she is accused of sending out a letter on company letterhead informing residents to make payments in the form of money orders until further notice because of an update to the online payment portal.Once apartment complex personnel became aware of the letter, Clayton was terminated. According to the report, Clayton returned 20 money order checks worth $14,798.22. Clayton however cashed one of the checks. According to the report, there is at least $11,999.23 unaccounted for.During law enforcement’s investigation, it was determined Clayton received Zelle payments related to apartment payments like security deposits, for example.Clayton allegedly received $31,249.32 via Zelle. A Port St. Lucie woman was arrested in Riviera Beach on suspicion of fraud.
